The LYFE center, or “Living for the Young Family through Education”, is a program run by the NYC Department of Education. The LYFE center is a daycare in a school building providing free childcare and early education for babies and toddlers from 6 weeks to 4 years old. The LYFE center is meant to help teen and young parents so they can continue attending school.
Ms. Kerline, a teacher at the LYFE center in the Prospect Heights Campus said the center has been around for, “about 30-40 years.” She went on to say, “It started to help students and parents get an education while their child is at school”. According to Ms. Kerline any child “from 6 weeks of age to 3 years old are eligible for the services, including 3k as well”. When describing a normal day at the LYFE center she said, “We welcome the students with a friendly hello, singing, and we follow the babies interest in what they like to do”.
According to an anonymous student who attended Prospect Heights, “LYFE truly cares about me and my child. They support us to the fullest. Because of the LYFE Program, I know I can achieve my academic and parenting goals.”
Mr. Doldron, a teacher at BASE), said, “ I make personal donations, and during the Christmas season I make personal donations along with other staff members which includes toys, books, and clothing”.
When asked how he got involved, Mr. Doldron stated, “ I was the advisor for student government and it was something the former principal asked me to personally continue.” He continued, “I think it’s important because students need to see that there are other children who may be less fortunate than them, it also gives them a feeling of self worth.”
Lastly, I think that the LYFE center being created was the best thing because it benefits every young parent with kids… Because both the child and the adult can get a free education without having to worry about child care.
