In BASE high school, celebrating culture through food, fashion, and/or traditions helps everyone feel included. We can normalize culture festivals by making them a regular part of our school year instead of something that only happens once or never or sometimes in college. Since our school once in a while is full of students from different backgrounds. It truly believes that when a student presents their fashion, it feels like the school feels welcoming and connected. Celebrating culture through food, fashion, and or traditions helps everyone feel included.
Another way our school could normalize culture festivals is by letting students help plan and lead them. If we create a student culture group, where we invite families to participate and work with teachers to include culture projects in class. The events feel more natural and meaningful. We could promote the events through posters, announcements, and school media platforms. Over time these celebrations help our school community feel proud of who we are!!!
Culture festival is celebrated in so many different ways. The perspective of each student shows how these events brings communities together. According to Elhadj Diallo, an 11th grade student, “Culture festivals are an event where traditions are showcased through activities, performances and displays. Community members and families participate by volunteering , contributing and promoting the event on social media.” Which helps preserve cultural heritage and even boosts tourism. 10th grader Ousmane Diallo adds that these festivals involve people and students like those in BASE, who participate , promote the event and enjoy how unique and visually exciting the celebrations are. Mr. Welch, a paraprofessional, highlights a specific example from Guyana. Where people celebrate culture festivals by flying kites and both citizens and government join in to celebrate together. These ideas show that culture festivals are celebrated through different traditions, student participation and community involvement which helps bringing people closer.
To bring this plan to life we could start and initiate a plan and start organizing stuff and a clear area , clean and safe to celebrate it for ex:- the auditorium. And get approval from the administration and develop the content required. And then sustaining the impact to life with a prize pool of whoever’s fashion out performs in the designated country.
