BASE students and staff gathered outside during the last two periods of school to celebrate a beautiful Wednesday in June that happened to be the school’s annual Field Day event: a fun outdoor event featuring competitive sports, usually set up for students to mark the end of the school year, show class spirit, and participate in physical activities.
There were a variety of activities to choose from, such as things like the pirate ship, mechanical bull, obstacle course, bouncy house, and so much more! Food was also given to everyone, like hotdogs, burgers, mac and cheese. Even treats like cotton candy and popcorn!
Field Day is an opportunity for schools to demonstrate to the whole school and community that physical education is important and fundamental. It’s a moment to show them what kids who are good at physical activities look and sound like. Having a great Field Day helps schools show why they need more time, money, and activities for their programs.
When Sara Stoler, the school vice-principal, was asked what she thought about the Field Day event, she responded with: “I think the field day is always a super fun day for the students. I think we’re really fortunate that the past couple of years we’ve had good weather. Like today it’s beautiful. I mean, everyone’s going to be super sweaty, but it’s lovely outside. I think it’s a really good opportunity for kids to just hang out without having to stress about anything as part of the reason why we do it at the end of the school year. And it’s a good opportunity for our ninth and tenth and eleventh grade students to have a chance to say goodbye to our seniors before they graduate.”
When kids realize how important it is to stay active, they also learn how to support and encourage their friends during games. Working together, talking to each other, and solving problems are important skills for kids to pick up, and field day is basically all about teamwork.
A lot of the activities on field day also show them how to ask their teammates for help when they are trying to achieve a shared goal.
Student president Angel Almanzar made a statement that the Field Day event was “actually fun and it is a good day to include students, and all these fun activities help community building” When the eleventh grader was asked what he think should be improved for the event for next year, he replied with: “Probably get new bouncy houses because even though there’s two new bouncy houses, we still have these two same ones and I want to switch them off for something better.”
Field Day is an amazing day for the BASE family to build up their community and to just have fun. For the latest information regarding BASE’s community events, please visit the school website.
