Ocean warming is causing sea levels to rise, threatening coastal population centers, and increasingly causing fish die-offs. If we, as humans, don’t stop the fossil fuels and the greenhouse gases, the world’s ocean levels will keep increasing and the atmospheric heat will increase more. According to the U.S. Sea data said there is a 99% chance that in the next 30 years, we will see ocean levels rising 10 – 12 inches or 0.25 – 0.5 meters. So overall it is really important for the government to understand that we have to do something before it’s too late. MD Miraj, a Bangladeshi university student living in Brooklyn, said “From what I experienced, because of the ice melting, the water level is rising and the temperature is increasing. Also, the fish’s oxygen level is decreasing, they can’t stay in one place because of the temperature. They are swimming from one place to another and by mistake they come to land and die. To stop all of that we have to stop fossil fuels and greenhouse gases.” He has spent a lot of time by the ocean so he has seen this first-hand.
A reporter from National Geographic named Pete McKenzie tells us more about it. “Fish die-offs can happen naturally, following extreme weather like droughts or natural blooms of algae. But experts say that by disrupting the ecosystems that typically keep such die-offs in check, humans are making the die-offs worse, disproportionately affecting native fish, destroying habitats, and poisoning water.” Also, Simon Tye, a doctoral student from University of Arkansas, said that he “compiled 526 documented cases of fish die-offs that occurred across Minnesota and Wisconsin lakes between 2003 and 2013.” Overall, this shows how it is important for us to stop the fossil fuels and the greenhouse gas or it will be the reason for our death as world water levels increase. Hopefully, if somehow we stop the fossil fuels and the greenhouse gas we can save the world ocean from rising and there will be nothing to worry about.
