Jaylah Ji’mya Hickmon, also known as “Doechii,” was born on August, 18 1998. She started her music career as an unknown artist who suffered from financial struggles and depression. According to Economic Times, with no job, no money, and no place to stay, she decides to go all in on her dreams. “I think tomorrow I’m just gonna go to a whole bunch of studios and ask if they have any internships open,” Doechii says. “At this point, I have nothing to lose.” Doechii thought that her music career was hopeless until her song “Yucky Blucky Fruitcake” went viral on the social media platform TikTok. She quickly gained attention for her unique approach to music, sharp wordplay, and playful yet impactful lyricism. Her tracks, “Spookies” and “Persuasive” show her ability to challenge norms and explore themes of identity, empowerment and self expression.
According to Economic Times, Doechii’s music caught the attention of Anthony Tiffith Jr. who is the president of (TDE) Top Dawg Entertainment, the powerhouse label behind SZA and Kendrick Lamar. Impressed by her raw talent, Tiffith encouraged Doechii to move to Los Angeles, offering her a place to stay and eventually signing her in 2022. Her debut album, Alligator Bites Never Heal, was born from pain, resilience, and a newfound clarity in sobriety. Songs like “Denial is a River” detailed her battles with depression, addiction, and heartbreak, resonating with millions and catapulting her to stardom. Aubrey Barker,a 10th grader at BASE High School, shares his admiration for Doechii’s unique lyricism, saying her style feels fresh and unpredictable, with lyrics that don’t sound repetitive.
Aubrey says, “I like her uniqueness, her lyricism is unique and awake. It kind of sounds like she’s just adding random words to her lyrics, which I like, and it’s not very, like repeated.” Aubrey likes her bold approach to lyric writing, which feels raw and free. He enjoys the artist lyrics being random as if they’re randomly chosen, which adds freshness and originality to her music.
