At one point in time, the swimming varsity team pool at Prospect Heights was filled with the sound of splashes and laughter from students eager to join. However, fewer students are diving into the pool this year. But with a little encouragement and hard work, the team hopes to make a big splash once again!
The decline in participants on the Prospect Heights varsity swim team raises concerns about student engagement in sports. Many students don’t want to join due to the fear of injury or not feeling confident enough to compete. Many students spoke about how much they would contribute to the team and how they can achieve many things. With the right support and motivation, more students can overcome their fears and enjoy the benefits of swimming.
A student from BASE High School, Danica Gittens said she noticed the coach is recruiting a lot of good swimmers but most of them turn down the offer. There have been some students competing for the team at the higher level competitions which is impressive.
By simply joining the team a lot of students benefit because of scholarships and other programs that help them to grow.
International High School Freshman Joseph Rayo, said, “ I’ve always wanted to join the swim team. I practice at least three to four times a week.’’
Danica, a former varsity swimmer has pointed out that during her time at swimming for the team some students never took it seriously, while others were willing to learn and coaches look at that and they can easily kick you out if you horseplay a lot. I can also see that these kids just want to have fun but they have to know the difference between fun and hard work.
In addition to the team, students also find support from their teammates. “Being on the team means pushing each other to do our best. It also helps to have friends cheering you on! It also teaches discipline and teamwork,” said Aldahir Moreas from Global Citizenship High School.
Swimmers have expressed their dedication for the team and how much it can help them as long as they push themselves to work harder.
BSMT Student Saral Persaud said and also Joseph Rayo stated, “I want to improve my personal times and even qualify for some competitions.” These students offer to dedicate the time and hard work. And there is a lot more to come with confidence.
Dare to dive in! Joining the swimming team could be the best decision you’ll ever make.
