Change
There was a time where students were able to use phones or electronic devices in schools. Well there have been some changes. Due to the recent statewide phone ban students have lost the ability of using their phones in schools. But what was the cause of this?
Explanation
Due to phones being used and seen as a distraction in class with students not paying attention to the lesson that the teacher/professor etc was trying to present students making a loud outburst in class phones were put on a ban due to it being seen and found to be ruining their education in school and possible future. It has recently been shown that 72% of U.S high school teachers say cell phone distraction is a major problem in the classroom. Today I will be interviewing BASE staff or personnel on their personal opinion on the phone ban.
Interviews
Mrs. Witthaus, Journalism and Global History Teacher at BASE, has said that,“There is a lot of very clear research that shows that students’ learning focus is interrupted and is harmed by the presence of phones and messes with their overall attention span. It was a really interesting study that just came out that shows having your phone not even looking at it, but having it in the same room as you decreases your retention many times over, decreases how much you can remember, when we take away phones, we see bullying decrease, and we see violence at school decrease. Many school fights are filmed, which I think is one of the most disgraceful things a person could choose to do, and that the source of many of these fights also are dramas that are unfolding on the phone.”
Vice Principal At BASE, Ms. Stoler has also agreed or stated that the usage of phones in schools strays away the students attention from the lesson at hand and decreases your overall attention time which is seen as a con and taking away phones during school hours as a pro due to it not only increasing a scholar’s attention but also making violence, drama, and bullying less likely to occur.
While some students might disagree, the overall statement of phones at school decreasing your attention span and affecting some students’ mental health highly outweighs the pros of having phones during school hours making them unlikely for them to return.
But the real question is, what is your perspective on the matter? Do you agree with phones being negative on student mental health or do you believe that phones could be used and incorporated educationally at school?
